Storm Safety Tips to Protect Your Family

Best Practices to keep your family safe and warm for the next storm.

“If the temperature is less than my age, I don’t get out of bed,” once quipped Ellen DeGeneres. If that were true, many of us would spend the entire winter under our blankets.

In addition to snow, strong winds and storms create unpleasant weather conditions can result in power failures. When emergency strikes, are you prepared to protect your family and home? How long could you survive without electricity and gas? Even with power, how many days could you comfortably stay in your home during a major storm?

Why take chances when it comes to the well being of your family? You can’t put a price on peace of mind. Plan ahead before disaster strikes. Following are 12 great ways to prepare for the next storm:

  • Invest in a portable generator. Mi-T-M offers a wide selection of reliable and rugged generators. Choose from models beginning at 3,000 watts up to 14,000 watts. We’ll help you select which type is best for your needs.
  • Consider purchasing a back up generator. Unlike a portable model, this type of generator is permanently installed and sits outside your home, like an air conditioning unit. When you lose power, the generator revs and roars to action automatically. It delivers power directly to your home’s electrical system. You can opt to power your entire home or just select items like the heating/cooling, lighting, or refrigerator. Best of all, a back up generator will power on even when you’re away from home. You needn’t lift a finger.
  • Buy a portable space heater or two. Mi-T-M has dozens of models that will keep your family warm and toasty.
  • Keep a week worth’s of food in your home at all times. Canned goods are the best. Make sure you have a manual can opener.
  • Stock up on blankets, coats, mittens, and hats. Store these in a plastic container for easy access during storms.
  • Keep a 5-7 day supply of bottled water. Of course you can drink the water, but if the water supply is gone, you can also use the water for cleaning.
  • Store paper products for a storm, including Kleenex, paper plates, and toilet paper.
  • Make sure you have adequate batteries to power your home appliances: flashlights, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and/or remote controls.
  • Collect enough candles to light each room in your house.
  • Stockpile firewood if you have a fireplace.
  • Keep a list of contacts and emergency numbers. Post this in a high and dry location.
  • Plan for fun. Keep books, playing cards, and board games on hand to pass the time.

We hope you’ve found these dozen tips helpful. At Mi-T-M, we provide solutions to make your life easier.
